After developing a pro camera app for a client, I had the idea to develop a simple camera app that would convert your digital-looking iPhone photos into film shots. With a background in computer vision, I knew I could create film filters using the Metal Language.
Swift, SwiftUI, UIKit, MVVM, Combine, Core Image, AVFoundation, Metal, MSL, Core Graphics, PhotoKit, Swift Concurrency, StoreKit 2, and UserDefaults were used to build Portra Cam using Xcode. Accessible with VoiceOver and Dynamic Type in 14 languages.
Prior to development, I designed the app to be easy to use and allow people to capture film-like photos with just one hand. During development, I optimized GPU performance by compiling metal files on app launch instead of each time they were accessed.
Since its launch, Portra Cam has managed to attract a wide range of users interested in film photography without any external marketing. It has since reached thousands of users with its App Store Optimization and has been featured in articles and app trackers!

Portra Cam allows you to shoot film on your iPhone using one of five amazing film stocks. All you have to do is select your film and take a picture, and Portra Cam will handle the rest! Portra Cam also includes useful features like dreamy mode for capturing magical moments and aesthetic composition grids for perfecting symmetry.

How does it work? When you take a picture, Portra Cam begins the development process. This means that the work environment is built on uncompressed image data, resulting in rich image data that allows us to achieve the desired film stock look without sacrificing quality, as opposed to photo editing apps that work on previously compressed image data.
With the help of experienced photographers, we worked extremely precisely to replicate every single aspect of each film stock. To achieve the authentic look, we paid great attention to accuracy, colors, skin tones, and grain texture.
With Portra Cam film stocks, you can shoot with Ektar 100, Portra 160, Portra 400, Portra 800, and B&W Tri-X 400.
We use image processing technology to determine how a scene should be interpreted while capturing with one of the film stocks, allowing you to focus on shooting photos rather than post-production photo editing.

With Portra Cam, you can shoot in "Dreamy" mode, which gives your photos a subtle glow. Dreamy mode adds a faint, misty overlay to your pictures so they feel like they were shot in a dream—a place where the air is full of magic.
